Saat anda memerlukan koneksi internet, perlu alat untuk melakukannya. Kalau di kantor anda mungkin tak perlu bingung. Karena biasanya kantor sudah berlangganan dengan koneksi yang stabil, meski mahal.

Tapi saat anda di rumah, mungkin anda memerlukan cara koneksi yang lebih murah. Toh koneksi yang dibutuhkan tak sebanyak di kantor yang dipakai banyak orang. Apalagi lama koneksi anda kurang dari 2 jam.

Atau saat anda di luar kantor, anda memerlukan koneksi secara mobil. Kalau ke warnet tak praktis. Juga anda yang memang pekerjaannya sering ada di luar kantor.

Ada solusinya, yakni berkoneksi lewat seluler. Alatnya ada 2. Pertama bisa menggunakan modem. Dan kedua bisa menggunakan ponsel. Lalu sebaiknya apa yang bisa dipakai?

Sebelum saya menjawab, apakah anda seperti ini:
1. Koneksi hanya dipakai sendiri. Kalaupun dibagi (share), tak banyak orang, maksimal 3 orang termasuk anda.
2. Anda melakukan koneksi tak lama. Maksimal 2 jam.
3. Koneksi anda hanya untuk kepentingan pribadi, bukan bisnis. Artinya koneksi anda digunakan untuk mencari keuntungan.

Kalau anda seperti di atas, maka sebaiknya anda menggunakan ponsel daripada modem. Karena diluar anda gunakan koneksi internet, anda bisa membawanya untuk keperluan standar: telpon, SMS bahkan main game.

Namun supaya lebih cepat, anda harus membeli ponsel yang sudah 3G. Syukur kalau sudah diatasnya, HSDPA atau HSUPA. Sayangnya HSDPA/HSUPA masih mahal. Bahkan 3G saja masih mahal.

Mahal? Ya, tapi tak semahal dulu. Meski juga tak murah.

Saya awalnya mencari ponsel 3G dibawah harga 1,250 juta. Ternyata hanya 2 ponsel baru yang dijual. Saya naikkan jadi 1,3 juta, hanya nambah 1 ponsel. Karena itu anggarannya saya naikkan jadi 1,5 juta. Tambah, tapi tetap tak sampai 10 ponsel.
